Overview
Metro Atlanta families and neighborhoods are
being devastated by the foreclosure crisis.
In 2005, at the height of the subprime
lending boom, Georgia ranked third
nationally in mortgage fraud and fifth for
percentage of subprime loans. In 2008, there
were more than 85,000 foreclosure filings in
Georgia, an increase of more than 44% over
2007 and a 117% increase over 2006. But the
problem isn’t isolated to the City of
Atlanta. Metro Atlanta as a whole accounts
for 81% of the state’s foreclosures. Just
this year alone, there have been more than
88,000 foreclosures for the 10-county metro
Atlanta – a 40% increase from the same time
last year. In fact, Atlanta ranks third
nationally behind only Las Vegas and Detroit
in the number of vacant rental units and
single family homes.
The Housing & Economic Recovery Act of 2008
(HERA) included funding for a program named
Neighborhood Stabilization Program - allocations totaling
more than $97 million for metro Atlanta.
Currently, we are partnering with the City
of Atlanta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fulton, Henry and
Rockdale counties to manage $18.4 million in
NSP funds to reoccupy 240 vacant and
foreclosed homes by 2010.
